Closing down on Mom’s Birthday on July 3rd, 2015

Els and Concrete Jungle on Jo Ann Smith's birthday

Good evening friends.  I figured to break this picture out for my mother’s birthday and all.  This was towards the beginning of our second journey in the second half of 2012 which took us further then Sammy & Family ever dreamed.  I remember taking this picture in Times Square with my mother and Sammy.  I knew the second I clicked the camera this would be a classic picture.

My mother just updated her profile on Facebook so she can get more involved with the ELS community.  Feel free to send her a friend requests.  You can find her by searching “Jo Ann Smith”  –  Or you can just send me a request and find her on my friend’s list, you can find me by searching; “Scott Evan Smith”  — Or send a friend request to my sister, “Jessica Lee Smith”

Basically all of you saw the story unfold and the journey back we had to make right up until today and continuing.  I told my family when we were forced to start over, come hell or high water, this train is headed to destination “Foreverville. ELS is not only my life, it’s my whole family’s life, and that includes all of our friends from around the world.

Sammy & Family has great plans coming up.  You might want to think about it like ELS’s greatest hits or something.

Anyway, I bring all this up because between my mothers birthday, this picture from our second journey forward, and 4th of July tomorrow, I guess I’m feeling nostalgic and reflective.

OK, let’s close with two positive notions.

1. When you feel strongly passionate about something, there is no finish line, it’s a never ending  continuum.

2. Once again quoting lyrics from Barry Manilow’s song “Ready to take a chance again” — The lyrics are; ♫♫♫ You get what you get when you go for it ♫♫♫.  Very powerful.  Its saying how many sacrifices will you make for what you love ?

And for Sammy & Family there is no wall strong enough to keep the ELS training from its never ending course.

And with that friends, signing off from Puerto Rico on day 173, Scott Smith for Sammy & Family.

Happy Birthday Mom, or Joann Smith for friends

Happy Birthday Mom

Good morning friends.  Today is out Mother’s Birthday.  Jess wrote a really nice birthday story for her.  Before you read that I wanted to mention what I asked her on the phone last night.  I asked her what positive message would you like to share with our ELS friends around the word ?

Joann’s Answer; “If people committed the time doing things that make them happy that they commit to worrying all the time, your life will be much better.  Ok, Jessica’s story on Jo Ann Smith starts now.

Happy Birthday to our gorgeous Mother, Jo Ann Santoro Smith. We are wishing her a very happy birthday today, and hoping that all of her deepest wishes come true.

There really is no one like our Mother. She has an amazing heart, and she is truly brilliant. Not to mention that the word “Spitfire” wouldn’t do her justice. Our mother doesn’t mince words at all. She’s always been a force to be reckoned with. In fact she was born that way.

One story comes to mind from when Jo Ann was a toddler in her highchair. She had recently learned the phrase ” God Dam* It”. She was repeating it over and over , as her Mom was feeding her one day. Her Father came into the Kitchen and scolded her. He said “Jo Ann, if you say that one more time, I’m going to wash your mouth out with soap!”. She then went on to say it again “God Dam* it!”. Her father went and got the soap immediately, and rubbed it into her mouth. She winced from the soap as she sat there.  So he looked at her then and said “Now how does THAT taste?”,  and she looked him in the eye and said, “Good, God Dam* it!”. They couldn’t help but laugh at how stubborn she was in nature. But she was always loving , loyal and always had a heart of Gold.

As a child she went to church very often, and wanted to be a nun, but as she grew up more, that aspiration changed. She later became a much beloved second grade school teacher. Her students have memories of her tap dancing for them on top of her teachers desk, and teaching them a real love of learning. She made it fun. She was extremely hands on and made a difference in each of those children’s lives. She was also incredibly beautiful, and still is.

Love and destiny found her one night at a friends party. She was sitting alone at a table with an empty seat next to her. A gorgeous man, a tall, dark stranger approached her , and said ” Is anyone sitting here?”  She said “No”, and the rest is history. It was love at first site. That stranger was Barry Smith, our father.

Barry and Jo Ann’s love story was a beautiful one. I’ve never seen two people so crazy about eachother. From the night they first met, until they day he passed away, they were inseparable. She was his everything, and she was madly in love with him.

It’s been 31 years since our Fathers passing,  and our Mother has been unwavering in her strength and devotion. Even after losing our father, she always made us feel that we had someone there who would defend us to the death. She’s had a lot of blows thrown at her since he died, and still she continues to fight.

In 2008 Jo Ann had the same open heart surgery that our father Barry had so many years ago. Even while going into that surgery, she stood up and walked into the operating room
with a smile on her face, being brave again, for us. Thank God all went well. She’s one of the strongest women I’ve ever known.

So with that , we say Thank you, Mom. Thank you for everything. For taking on the world for us, for never giving up , for being there under any circumstance , at any time. For being the toughest little firecracker on earth. Like all families , we argue, but our love is never in question.

We love you ❤️!

With so much love,
From Jessica Lee Smith,

Scott I think you should Join the Navy, High School is not for you

Scott High School is Not for you

Good evening friends.  A funny story tonight, true story, but kind of funny I guess.  As i told you many times I did very poorly in high school, which is not something to be proud of, but it was the actual case.  Amongst many confrontations i had with the school staff growing up, I will never forget my English teacher in 11th Grade Mr. Elliot.

He was a good man, don’t get me wrong.  But once a month he would say to me, “Scott is there something wrong with you?”  I had no clue what he was talking about.  I was like, um; ” Do u mean with my hair or cloths, I’m sorry I’m not really catching on to what you mean?”  He said, “no, none of that, but you are never in class and get either a “D” or and “F’ every other quarter”   So I said, ” I know, its terrible” — He said, “school is not for everyone, did you ever think about joining the Navy and making a real man of yourself ?”  I said; ” you mean like being at sea with only men on a boat in the middle of the ocean for 9 months out of the year?”  Mr. Elliot said; “Yeah, something like that”

So i said “Actually Mr. Elliot, i really never thought about that, but to be honest, it really does not sound appealing at all”  — Then i said, “If this concludes our conversation, I would like to continue to blow off classes and flirt with girls”

Now of course looking back, Mr. Elliot was right on many levels, but boy am I glad I was not on a ship in the middle of the ocean for 9 months a year.   So to Mr. Elliot who had good intentions, thank you, but No thank you.

Ok friends, lets close with two positive notions.

1. It’s nice to hear suggestions, but you must decide what’s best for you, nobody else.

2. My dad was right, when you get a “C” in class it stands for “Courageous” —  when you get a “D” in class it stands for “Dandy” — when you get an “F” in class, it stands for “Fantastic”

My dad went on to tell me if you got in a”B” in class you are actually a “Bastard”  — and if you got an “A” in class you were actually an “_sshole”

Now i can’t say my father was right, but I’m not sure I can say my father was wrong either.

Friends remember, my mother Joann Smith’s birthday is tomorrow, Jess is going to write a story on her that will be featured on “The Good News Channel”

Signing off from Puerto Rico on day 172, Dr. Harp Seal for Sammy & Family.

Henri Coleman and Sammy & Family

Henri and Rick Coleman and Sammy & Family

Good morning friends.

Happy Throwback Thursday.  This is our great friend Henri Coleman from Texas.  She and her husband Rick stopped by while they were in NYC.  There were smiles all around as you can see.  Vanessa and I could not say enough good things about Henri and Rick, just very happy and pleasant people to be around.  It was a real special day.

Everybody should checkout Henri’s Facebook page; “Henri Loves Paris

Ok, lets’s kick this day off with two positive notions;

1. This could be one of the greatest days of my life simply with the right attitude, why not ?

2. What will I trade a day of my life for today so tomorrow I’m happy about it ?

Have a great Thursday friends.
