From our friend Pat on Grell on Health tips for Dogs and Cats;
Dogs and cats are susceptible to the same types of cancers as humans. Annual veterinarian visits are always a great idea but between those medical checkups, we, as responsible pet owners, need to be diligent in looking for any signs of trouble.
One sign to look for is unusual signs of odor. Doggie breath is common but if it becomes really foul and you can’t control it with the usual methods, see your vet and get it checked.
Be alert for bumps or lumps on or under the skin. In my case, my Siamese cat, Mark Anthony, had his first signs of trouble with a small dark growth on his “elbow” on his hind leg. My vet removed the growth and advised that it was possible cancer. I continued to monitor him and a couple years later he developed a lump on the back of his neck. Again, the vet removed it but this time it had spread and I lost him later that same year to bladder cancer.
More information to come in the following weeks but in the meantime, love your pets and make sure that they get routine medical checkups. Most vets, like mine, welcome your questions and never hesitate to get a wellness check if you have any concerns at all.
For now, my newest cat family member, Prince Charming and I wish you all a very happy, healthy 2015 filled with love.
