This is first time that we have done a Review and Rewrite together. This was warranted because a lot of people were confused by this movie. We have seen it about 41 times and it still catches us.
So, let’s clear the confusion. Quite simply, this was about a man who had a new girlfriend (Penelope Cruz ) and made a horrible decision one morning. As he was leaving his new romance’s place, his ex girlfriend ( Cameron Diaz ) happened to be driving by. She stopped her car and asked, “How about taking a ride with an old friend?” Tom Cruise was feeling guilty about how sad she was and got into her car. The ex girlfriend proceeds in an attempt to take their lives by driving off a road, sending the car airborne, crashing them into a stonewall. Upon impact she dies. However, Tom Cruise miraculously survives leaving him with severe injuries. His face was completely distorted and he was in constant unimaginable pain. It was then that he began to drink and take pills to chase his sorrows away. It got so bad that Penelope Cruz could not stay with him anymore. Now he is left alone with bitterness and regret.
He researched this “Life Extension Company,” that had knowledge on bringing the dead back to life, after being Cryogenically Frozen. He signed a deal with them that upon his death, they would take his body. That same night, he took his own life by drinking and drugging himself to death. As agreed upon, The Life Extension Company took his body until they could bring him back to life. They kept the mind and body in a dream state until they could figure out the best game plan. 160 years had passed and his dream state for the first time was out of control. The Life Extension Comapany sent an image of a person into his mind to calm him down, (A tech support guy image) if you will. The tech support image asked Tom Cruise, “ Do you want to remain in a dream state or do you want to be brought back to life?” The Tom cruise guy responded, “ I don’t want to dream anymore, I want a real life. “ The movie Ends with his eyes opening back up.
So, two quotes in movie to take note of;
1. “ Every passing minute is another chance to turn it all around.”
Great quote, happens to be very true. What’s done is done. Now it’s about having what you want and appreciating what you’ve got.
2. “ I don’t want to dream anymore, I want a real life “
Powerful quote right there. Make your dream your actual life. Don’t let fear keep you down.
Rewrite Begins now; Tom cruise comes out of his new girlfriend’s place that morning as his lurking ex-girlfriend pulls up to him in a car and asks, “How about taking a ride with an old friend.” He says “No thanks, I’ll walk.” Tom then goes into a great courtship with Penelope Cruz, they get married and decide NOT to have kids. They felt life would have greater purpose committing to the voiceless animals in need all over the world. A great new trend started. Many people were now starting NOT to have kids and to devote more time to animals in need. As an accidental but God-like benefit, the human population slowed down and as a result we stopped building out new real estate. Why was that so great? Great question. The answer is; because we would not be building new homes where animals already were living and then say, “Hey, there is an over population of this specie or that specie. We would finally realize and comply with, there is an over population of people, animals have nothing to do with that. It’s a people problem.
As for the ex-girlfriend, Cameron Diaz, now that Tom said he won’t take a ride with her, she drives away broken hearted. So, she mourns over it a month or two, mends her heart, and restores herself to normalcy. Like they always say “time heals all.” And that’s exactly what “time” did for her. She was so grateful for her mended heart that she opened clinics all over the world called, “If you have been broken up with and you don’t know what to do, call 1-800-Mend – Your – Heart.” The end. The movie still would have been great.
